Intro to Literature & Composition

(Required for 9th grade)

Students may choose either the regular version or the college preparatory version. The college prep verstion is recommended for any student planning to attend college after graduation. Introduction to Literature and Composition is focused on the academic content standards from the Ohio Department of Education. During the semester students will survey reading materials such as informational, technical, and literary texts in order to build reading comprehension skills and acquire new vocabulary. In addition, students will write narrative, descriptive and persuasive essays. Students will also give a variety of oral presentations. The college prep class will focus on preparing students for college. The pace will be more progressive in order to challenge students to achieve the skills necessary for success at the college level. Students must pass Intro to Lit./Comp before moving on to Literature and Composition.

Literature & Composition or College Prep. Literature & Comp.

Prerequisite-Intro to Lit. & Comp.

This is a continuation of the Intro course. Students will stregthen their reading and writing skills along with their ability to synthesize information for informative/research reports and presentations. Students will prepare for the OGT. The college prep class will focus on preparing the student for college. The pace will be more progressive in order to challenge students to achieve the skills necessary for success at the college level. Students must pass Literature & Compostion before taking the next level of English.

College Prep. Writing and Research

Prerequisite-Lit. & Comp.

This is a challenging class designed to prepare the junior or senior student for the writing he or she will encounter in college. The basic writing steps of prewriting, drafting, and revising will be utilized in this course while composing various composition modes which may include but are not limited to descriptive, camparison/contrast, personal narrative, definition, argumentative, exposition and persuasion. Students will do a research project following the logical steps in research, writing and presentation. Students may also do literary analysis of art, short stories, poetry, and selected novels. Students will use various forms of technology to complete the assignments. Computer Applications is recommended as a prerequisite.
